  • Persistent Sales Calls 1129

Every week we get calls from a Double Glazing Company.  We have bought things from them in the past but no longer require their services.

They get around this, by stating that they are merely checking to see if we are satisfied with the work they have done.  This has been going on for ages and ages.

Today they called as we were having lunch and I quickly stepped in to say that we were not requiring anything and put down the phone.  Blow me, they rang twice more. The third time my wife answered the phone and told them the same thing,  This happened again and the person on the other end shouted at her and told her not to be rude to them. She wasn't,; she merely told them not to keep pestering us like that.

What is the legal position ?  Is there anything we can do to get them stopped ?

That is so annoying! I am sorry to hear that! I would have simply disconnected my phone :(.  I looked up some of the legal rights, as I have had the same issues just not as constant or as rude as your people. This is what I found
http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs5-tmkt.htm Maybe this will help you to at least find out how to get them to not be able to call anymore.  Good luck with those buggers, they never give up!

We have this same problem. We've lived in our present home for just over 12 years now, but we still receive the occasional telephone sales call from a double-glazing firm we've never had dealings with and who actually installed some double-glazing for the previous occupant of this address.

The first step is to make sure your phone number is ex-directory. Then I would reccommend installing an answerphone, with a recorded message inviting callers to leave their name and phone number for you to ring back - sales canvassers hate answerphones and NEVER leave their name & number! Make sure that all your family and close friends know to leave their name and number, otherwise you won't know who's been ringing you.

    It works for us!

I can't see what is wrong with a simple use of the words 'No, thank you' and putting the phone down.

No one obliges you to justify yourself, you don't want it, end of.  English people are just too polite, but the most useful word in our language is 'No'! It is not 'being rude' to refuse a service that you don't want, and even if it were, it's not very polite to interrupt your lunch.  I have sometimes had a caller who said 'Is it convenient to talk, have you a few minutes to spare now?' To which the answer is either 'Yes' or 'No'.
