    Mike Dee

On 4th September, you asked for advice about estimating your future gas bills.   I’m sorry that no-one has replied to you until now but there’s no simple, accurate answer to your question so that’s the likely reason for the lack of response.

The relation between “units” consumed and the payment demanded is complicated and depends on your supplier’s tariff (especially on whether it involves a “Standing Charge”), on the type of meter you have and on other more minor variables.

If you still want advice, send another post to give as much detail as you can.   You should be able to get it all from any previous gas bill but, as far as the meter is concerned, the essential thing is the size of its “units”;  a close look at its face should tell you whether it is measuring in units of “100 cubic feet” or units of “1 cubic metre”.

If you can also say roughly how many units you generally use in each quarter (that’s likely to vary a good deal from one season to another), that will help, particularly if a “Standing Charge” applies.

Hi Mike it is now Sept 08 so you may have by-passed this. ( I did not know that we had a Q & A page and just found it by chance) However, I have found that there is a no 'win' situation here. whoever your dealer is. If you have a lower unit system then you can be sure that the standing charges are high and if you have a tarrif with no standing charge then the units are higher. We are all told how to 'save ' on energy.. which I think the majority of us are doing... One to save on the environment and two to save on the household bills... but the big BUT is... the more we cut back the less the energy companies are getting finacially and therefore their share holders are getting less . SO they put the gas/electricity up again and again and again. That is your answer Mike we can never win with these big guys. We have to sacrifice while they have .... excuses. I have found that eating out (carvery £3.50 at local pub) is saving on my food bill, my gas/electric and my water ... plus my time in the kitchen. My home is well insullated and as yet haven't needed the heating on.  It is a debatable subject Mike  but there is no answer I'm affraid. ( we could always pollute the air again with big log fires and plenty of hot water bottles at bedtime !! )   Kathie
