When my Mum had to sort out care for my Grandma a Social Worker came round to assess her needs and the level of financial support she could get from Social Services.  I think the threshold is something like £21000 for savings. Grandma has way over that and so pays for her own care - I think once it runs out we can be re-assessed.

    Deby

I have recently had cancer, there is alot of help that they can get. Your Macmillan nurse should have all the info. get in touch thats what they are there for. McMillan nurses are there for the family really to discuss concerns and worries.

It is  very hard time for all of you. McMillain do have a fund for financial help...the nurses have to sign and apply for this for  your dad. It can cover utility bills, new bed and bedding anything that helps the family at this time. There may be some details on there website.

I am assuming you/they are claiming disablity/carers allownce through Dept of work and pensions as your mum is ill and he is her carer.?

Get talking asap to the McMillan nurse....you should not be having this worry about finances at such  horrible time.

Good luck. And my thoughts are with you at this very hard time.

Oh and you say your dad has 'limited time', i am assuming you mean he is terminal ill!

Diasablility and carers allowance are NOT affected by savings...

get the sysytem working for you....dont be afraid to ask . Your parents deserve to get what they can.

My sister, aged 41 died this summer....from Bowel cancer but having never claimed any benefit through her life ending up claiming everything she was entitled to...council tax benefit, DLA , blue badge for her car.

It all helped her to enjoy her limited time that was left...

Good luck...would like to hear how you get on.

this is my first visit to this site. was just hving a look to see what i could find out for my mums benefit.

take care, best wishes and sorry but my A on the laptop is not working properly!!

    becks,
