    Hi

I hope someone can give us some well needed advice about paying for my dad as he is about to go into a care home.My parents have about 50,000 .Two bank accounts are in joint names with 20,000 in and the rest in my mums name only with the remaining 30,000.Does she have to declare her accounts to fund his care or just the 2 that are in joint names. He is 93 and has dementia and mum is 85 years.

    Thank you in anticipation

My understanding is that it is only the person concerned who can be charged for his care, so your Mum's savings in her own name should not be counted.  She may need those savings for herself, after all! In any case, 50% of the joint savings are hers.

That's how things apply in my country - England.  May be different in the other countries that make up the UK.
