My Nan is currently in hospital after being admitted last week, she basically hadn't been eating properly for about a week, was totally dillusional (speaking and even claiming to see my dead Grandad), incontinent and when a Dr finally came to do a house visit he advised that she had a severe chest infection and called an ambulance.  Anyway, my Mum & 2 Aunts have been visiting her and my Mum said she was basically on her 'death bed' last weekend...she couldnt even hold a sandwich and had to drink from a baby cup as she couldnt drink from a normal glass bevause she was so weak. Yesterday my Aunt had a meeting with 4 specialists at the hospital after she made a complaint and she was told that by them ALL that my Nan has cronic liver disease (to add to her list of other ongoing problems, such as COPD, partially sighted etc) and has severe vascular dementia.  They told her that she isnt capable of living by herself, which we already agree with, and that she may have to be sectioned.  So anyway, today my Nan was seen by a social worker & this person seems to think that she is fine and will be ok to live on her own back in her house!!!!!  We seriously dont know what to do?! Where should be turn now? All we want is for my Nan to be looked after and it is clear to all of her family that she isnt capable...my Mum says that if they send her home on her own she will probably either be back in hospital in 2 weeks or she will be dead. Can someone please offer some advise, it is very upsetting and not only is my Nan's health in question, I am now getting worried about my Mum and Aunts as they have all been so stressed out and are worrying themselves to the point of break down over this.

A social worker is not medically-qualified and is therefore not competent to make medical decisions about a person's future.  Your Nan sounds to be a very sick lady and should be in hospital. She may be 'sectioned' - this means the Mental Health Acts have been referred to and she is deemed to be a danger to herself and/or to others. The medical people are the ones who will/should make decisions about your Nan's treatment. It does not sound, sadly, as if she can get better.

People who are sectioned because they are elderly and unable to look after themselves are not put in with standard psychiatric patients, so don't worry about that - they do differentiate between age-related dementia and other mental health problems.

    Good luck.
