  • Carers Allowance 206

Eight years ago I adopted an elderly gentleman who has no relatives.  He is ninety one years of age now and bed bound.  Before I reached the age of sixty I was receiving £55 carers allowance but as soon as I reached sixty years of age I was told that I was no longer entitled to carers allowance and my money was stopped.  However I was told that I could receive what they call an underlying entitlement which is only £24 pounds a week.  I find this very unfair as I am finding it very difficult to cope because I have arthritis in my hands and hips.  If people care for someone 24 hours a day it is more difficult the older we get to remain carers.  We need more help with carers allowance not less.  This system is very unfair.

I never realised how unfair the system is until friends got together to help within the community and find the major problem of being a carer.

I am nearly twenty years older than my wife and will soon be facing the same problem as Toni because it is my wife who is disabled and needs help in many things especially mobility.

Another thing I have found is that there is assistance or should I say respite for the carer but hardly anything for the disabled.

Please tell me I am wrong

Significant numbers of older people in the UK provide regular unpaid care for a relative or friend; around 2.8 million carers are over 50. Many carers don't receive the financial or social support they need. Help the Aged is working with Government and local authorities to ensure older carers needs are properly considered, and that social services and benefits systems are geared towards them.

Help the Aged produces some information which you may find useful: the Claiming Disability Benefits leaflet gives information about disability benefits and Carer's Allowance and the Welfare Benefits for Older Carers information sheet gives more information on Carer's Allowance. You can find both of these titles in the 'Advice leaflets' page within the 'Advice & Support' section.

For more information about carers' rights, contact Carers UK. You may also find it useful to contact Vitalise, a national charity providing respite care and holidays for disabled people and their carers.

I have been looking after my husband for 3 years.  I receive a state pension of £130 per week this was earned because I worked till I was 62 contributed to the state pension because I didnt have a private pension I have been told I am due £55.00 carers allowance per week but since I have a state pension over the basic I am not due this carers allowance. I feel this is most unfair as I know people who get this who only get the basic pension.  I wonder why I worked so long as its to my disadvantage.
