Life in care homes set to improve
25 June 2009
A programme to improve the lives of people in care homes, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and run by Age Concern Cymru and Help the Aged in Wales, is launching today.
The programme, called My Home Life Wales, aims to make sure that living, visiting or working in a care home is an enjoyable experience.
Programme manager John Moore explains:
'My Home Life Wales will work with care home residents, their relatives and staff to identify and share ideas that make life better for people who live in, visit or work in care homes across Wales.
'For example, we’ve heard of one home that gave its corridors street names, so that residents were able to 'have their own address' – doesn’t 17 Brynderw Road sound so much more inviting and homely than plain old Room 17?'
Speaking at the launch of My Home Life Wales, Deputy Minister for Social Services Gwenda Thomas said:
'Wales has always led the field with programmes that benefit older people, and My Home Life Wales is another innovative project that will make a difference to so many people across the country.
'The Welsh Assembly Government fully supports the programme's ethos of involving care home residents in meaningful activities and decisions that affect them, as well as the programme’s emphasis on recognising the importance and value of the work done by care home staff.'
