Depression

8. Light boxes

'Seasonal affective disorder' or SAD is a type of depression that occurs in the winter months when daylight hours are short.

If you suffer from SAD it is a good idea to make the most of daylight and bright environments. Try to find time each day to be outside, especially if it's sunny. And when you're inside, try to be in rooms with a window.

Because being exposed to light can improve SAD it can be treated with light therapy or phototherapy. This involves sitting in front of a light box, or wearing a light cap that provides artificial daylight, for a set amount of time each morning during the autumn or winter months. Light therapy equipment is available from high-street chemists, but it is important to consult your doctor before using it.

People with serious eye problems, taking certain medications or who have skin that is sensitive to light should be cautious about using light therapy. It is also important never to use a UV or tanning light in this way as it can harm your eyes and skin.
