Pneumonia
2. Looking after yourself
The general advice is to rest and drink plenty of fluids. If you overexert yourself when you are ill, you can prevent your immune system from fighting off the illness.
Use over the counter medicines to reduce fever, body aches, and cough. Although this can help you to feel better, you will still need rest so that your body has the energy to fight the infection and to heal itself.
Most people make a full recovery, although feelings of tiredness can linger for some time. Unfortunately pneumonia can be severe and some people can die of this condition.
Can I take precautions?
The first precaution for anyone with a weakened immune system, heart or lung condition and everyone over 65 is to have a flu jab at your GPs in the autumn.
Ask your doctor or practice nurse about the pneumococcol vaccine. This is a one-off jab which protects you from the infection which causes pneumonia and other serious illnesses. The vaccine is recommended to everyone aged 65 and over.
The final precaution is: if you smoke try to stop, as smoking increases your chances of developing pneumonia.
