3. Treatments for stroke
Despite the fact that much can be done to prevent stroke there are only a few treatments for stroke. It is usually simply a matter of trying to assist recovery through good nursing and therapeutic care.
You may be prescribed drugs to prevent a further stroke (aspirin) and to treat any other underlying conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol. Even people with normal levels of cholesterol, suffering from either heart disease or stroke, may be given cholesterol lowering drugs as part of their treatment.
To date the total amount spent on research into stroke in this country has been disappointingly low. Basic scientific research is vital in order to provide information that can lead to the development of new treatments and assist recovery.
That is why the work of Research into Ageing (a special trust within Help the Aged) on stroke is so important.
