5. Reducing the risk of stroke

There is no single underlying cause of stroke. Risk factors can include existing medical conditions such as high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and thickening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis).

If you have or think you may have any of these conditions see your GP, and ask advice on how to minimise your risk from stroke.

Lifestyle changes that can help to reduce the risk from stroke and improve your general health include:

  • Giving up smoking.
  • Drinking alcohol only in moderation.
  • Doing regular physical exercise.
  • Keeping your weight at a sensible level.
  • Eating a healthy diet, low in fat, salt and sugar and high in fruit and vegetables.
  • Having your blood pressure checked at least once a year.
