Problems with hospital discharge

5. Problem 5

Problem: Your local council has assessed you and it has been agreed that you should enter a care home. Although you qualify for financial help towards the fees you are told that the local council is not able to help with the fees at the moment and that you will have to wait for funding to become available. This means that you are ‘stuck’ in a hospital bed, even though you really no longer need hospital care.

Solution: Local councils should not operate ‘waiting lists’ for funding for care homes. Ways of challenging the local council are explained in our information sheet no. 10, Paying for Your Care Home.
