Symptoms and side-effects

3. Heartbeat; headaches; tiredness

Palpitations or irregular heart beats

Lack of oestrogen can affect the regulation of the heartbeat.

Tips and treatments

  • Relax and breathe slowly. If possible, take a break.
  • Palpitations don't usually last long. If you have them regularly talk to your doctor.

Headaches and other aches and pains

Changes in oestrogen levels can trigger headaches, including migraines. It can also lead to an increase in general aches and pains such as muscular pain and joint and backache.

Tips and treatments

  • If you take painkillers it's best to take them when you first get symptoms. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the most helpful ones for you.
  • Eat little and often, especially starchy foods such as bread or pasta.
  • Exercise to relax tight muscles in the neck or back, swimming or yoga might help.

Tiredness and difficulty sleeping

Tips and treatments

  • Wear cool, natural fibres to sleep in.
  • Establish a bed time routine, wind down gently with a book or bath and avoid TV or radio just before sleeping.
  • A warm milky drink or a herbal tea could help you to sleep better.
  • Have several layers of bedclothes so you can adjust them to how hot (or cold) you feel.
