Free home insulation and security
Older people who claim benefits may be eligible for free home insulation and security products as part of a scheme run by Help the Aged and British Gas.
The scheme, called 'here to Help', offers free cavity wall and loft insulation to eligible older people. This can reduce home energy bills by hundreds of pounds, with potential savings of up to £345 per year for each person. For houses that are heated electrically, this saving could double in 12 months.
The work will take no more than half a day, and all cavity wall insulation comes with a 25-year guarantee from the Cavity Wall Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA).
Other elements of here to Help include:
- the HandyVan service (fitters of free home safety equipment);
- SeniorLink (immediate response monitoring service); and
- Safe at Home Packs containing a personal attack alarm, carbon monoxide detector, and a range of informative leaflets on topics from claiming disability benefits to keeping fit.
Older people can also opt to receive a free Benefits Health Check. Last year, 38 per cent of customers who applied for a benefits check were able to increase their benefits by over £1,000.
