Bogus Callers

2. What is a bogus caller?

Bogus Callers are conmen (or women) who use a variety of stories to gain access to the home in order to commit burglary. They may pose as an official caller from a local authority or a utility company with a plausible explanation for needing to enter the house.

Bogus or 'rogue' tradespeople
Another type of bogus caller are rogue tradespeople, those that pretend to be builders needing to do 'urgent' repairs or 'sales people' offering bargain products. Don't be pressurised by them to pay in advance and don't accept any offer from them to take you to the bank to withdraw money. Trading Standards Officers regularly investigate rogue tradespeople. They will be very interested in any such information you can supply about the activities of bogus callers in your area.
