Pavements Reported: 49 cases of dangerous paving reported to local authorities in the South East
Reducing Slips, Trips, Wobbles and Near Misses, Southampton SO18 1HZ, 24 June 2008

The Southampton Falls Prevention Team is a year old in 2008 and last year on National Falls Awareness day they held a stand in a local Sainsbury Supermarket. They were able to offer advice and literature to anyone enquiring, blood pressure checks and information on local activity/fitness groups with taster sessions i.e. demonstrations in the shopping precinct.

As the Team has expanded this year they plan to run two stands on opposite sides of the City (Shirley and Bitterne Sainsburys) giving advice on falls with both the causes and consequences, leaflets and blood pressure checks.

Active Lifestyles Roadshow, Sevenoaks District, Kent - Various Locations, 23rd - 27th June 2008
West Kent Housing Association and community development charity West Kent Extra are running a series of events during the week of National Falls Awareness Day at seven sheltered housing schemes across the Sevenoaks District. These events will include quizzes and games, information displays and literature on fall prevention, professional advice on various healthy aging issues, healthy eating advice and food tasting sessions, and special activity sessions from dance to yoga.

Falls Awareness Program, Royal Berkshire Hospital, RG1 5AN, 24th June 2008
This program is run by the Occupational Therapy team from Royal Berkshire Hospital and plans to create awareness about how to prevent Falls. Local services will be available for Falls prevention advice on the day from 1.30-4pm.

Exercise Class & Pavement Campaign, Horsham RH12 2DR, 23rd & 24th June 2008
West Sussex PCT will be holding an exercise class to live music for people in the community. This will be provided by New Harmonie. They will also be raising awareness of poor paving by posting cards to WSCC on 24th June and raising the issue in the local press.

The Community Rehab Team will be staffing a stand in the Paulsgrove & Wymering Healthy Living Centre. Literature and information will be available on falls prevention and healthy living, as well as professional advice from members of the team. All welcome.

Making Falls Prevention All Our Business, East Kent, CT1 3NG, 18-27 June 2008
Falls and bone health study day for health professionals on 18th June. All attendees will be provided with packs and asked to stage an event on their ward/dept, e.g, information sharing. All hospital falls link workers will display information. On 24/6 we will also link with in patient safety and launch our new falls screening tool aimed at promoting multi-factorial assessment and interventions to reduce harmful falls in hospital. This will include actions for ensuring safety in patients with confusion, delirium, incontinence and alcohol abuse. All wards, A/E, X Ray, Outpatients Departments, Osteoporosis Unit and therapies department will display and give out information about falls and bone health. The aim is to get everyone involved in the care of older people involved at Kent and Canterbury, William Harvey, and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospitals in Kent.

Falls Breakfast BBQ & Tai Chi Taster, Surrey North KT16 0PZ, 24 June 2008
North Surrey PCT are working with the local implementation Group which include, Borough Councils, Voluntary Agencies, meals on wheels, community centres and clubs, to have display boards and information packs for distribution. The Community hospitals will host their own events. There will be a Tai Chi taster session in one of the centres to complement the Tai Chi already in place. The Falls team are having a breakfast barbecue with the proceeds to enable them to have slipper swops and falls prevention awareness classes in the community centres early Autumn. All prevention classes are ongoing.

Falls Awareness & Prevention Roadshow, Shepway and Ashford CT19 2BX, 23-27 June 2008
Shepway and Ashford Falls Prevention service will be manning stands in Tenterden, Ashford, Folkestone, New Romney and Hythe each morning followed by talks and presentations at alternative locations during the afternoons. These will cover Falls Prevention and exercise advice with information and professionals in place to give advice where needed. The presentations will cover the main points of falls prevention and will hopefully be entertaining as well as informative. If anyone wishes to attend then please call for details.

Living in Safety, Canterbury District, CT6 5JJ, 24 June 2008
The event is to be held between 10.30am and 3.00pm at the Central Bandstand, Central Parade, Herne Bay. The event will promote safe living for the elderly and more vulnerable of our local residents and will include representatives from the Kent Energy Centre, HomeSafe, Kent Fire & Rescue, Shopmobility,Occupational Therapy Service, Stroke Association and local handyperson service etc.

Falls Roadshow, Montem Leisure Centre, SL1 2QG, 24 June 2008
A range of activities for the Slough Roadshow have been planned and include Tai Chi seated exercise and parachute games. We will also have stalls with information to promote a healthy lifestyle thus reducing the risk of falling. Information stands will include 50+ activities, Healthy Walks programme, Libraries and a whole host of others. A physio will be on hand to give information on how to get up after a fall and tips on how to prevent falling. Coffee and tea will be provided free of charge.

Pavement Hazard Spotting, High Wycombe & Aylesbury, 24 June 2008
To celebrate National Falls Awareness Day Buckinghamshire PCT have organised a series of events including town centre walks with balloons & info bags, poster displays in leisure centres throughout the area, links to health walks that day, a skydive on 28th June by the falls prevention coordinator and a relaunch of the online falls & osteoporosis module to GPs and other health professionals.

Exercise is Fun, Wokingham & Woodley RG40 & RG5, 23-24 June 2008
Monday afternoon will be taster sessions for seated/standing exercises and Tai Chi. Tuesday morning will be taster sessions for Tai Chi. At both sessions light refreshments will be available, opportunity for blood pressure checks, information about avoidance of falls and Assistive Technology. There will be an opporunity to exchange worn walking stick and walking frame ferrules.

The Partnership for Older People Project are running three separate events from 10am-2pm outside Boots (High St) Bognor, Guildbourne Centre (Worthing) and also Holmbush Centre in Shoreham. The events will raise awareness of risks such as osteoporosis, identify individuals at risk, and offer intervention looking at opportunities for physical activities in local area.

Falls Awareness Day, Petersfield Hospital Foyer GU32 3LB, 24 June 2008
Staff from Laurel Assessment Unit at Petersfield Hospital are holding a display to promote falls awareness. They are concentrating on the importance of correct footwear and being aware of home hazards. They are also going to talk about the LAU service offers to fallers.

Reducing the Risks, Farnham Hospital GU9 9QL, 24 June 2008
The day aims to promote falls prevention amongst older people and will include a variety of professionals from the statutory and voluntary sector hosting tables. Each of these will be promoting the services they provide to those older people who have fallen or are at risk of falling, as well as identifying the support available to those who care for those at risk. The event, will run from 10am to 3pm and be held at Farnham Hospital Farnham. Older people from across the region are being invited to join in to find out what they can do to prevent falls.
