7. Other housing options for older people

There are also some other housing options to consider. For example, some areas have almshouses, run by charitable trusts, which provide low-cost accommodation to elderly people in need. Most almshouses have their own rules as to who they house. Contact Elderly Accommodation Council for information on almshouses in your area.

Some councils and housing associations have housing schemes which are specially designed for older people, but which don't have a scheme manager. These properties are usually conveniently located for shops and services.

Similarly, some private developers sell homes with design features that make them especially appropriate for older people, but which aren't classed as sheltered housing as they don't have a resident manager.

Elderly Accommodation Counsel can provide you with details of this sort of housing in any area. Your local council and housing associations will also be able to tell you about any schemes that they run.
