World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Help the Aged took part in the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Thursday 15 June 2006.
About World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was organised by the International Network for the Prevention for Elder Abuse (INPEA) and took part in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action, which recognises the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.

Our aim and message for WEAAD
Our aim was to increase public awareness of elder abuse. What it is and where advice and information are available.
Our message was also to be aware - that everyone should look out for the older people they knew, those who are living in your street or local community.
We all have a responsibility to recognise elder abuse and take action against it.
What we wanted
We called on the Government to ‘lose the loophole’ in the Human Rights Act, which currently does not protect older people from mistreatment by private sector organisations. As the majority of care services, such as care homes, for older people are provided by private organisations, thousands of older people’s rights are at risk of being breached.
