Mass lobby at Westminster
Age Concern and Help the Aged staged a successful mass lobby at Westminster to demand action on the care system.
The lobby was held on the same day we released new analysis on the care system including findings that:
- almost two thirds of local councils rated as providing ‘excellent’ care at home are failing to provide any care at all to many older people who cannot carry out basic daily tasks; and
- 35 out of 56 councils rated as ‘excellent’ by the Commission for Social Care Inspection only provide care services to those with ‘critical or substantial’ needs.
Over 200 older people arrived at Parliament on Wednesday 10 June to demand action from their MPs ahead of the publication of the Government’s long-promised Green Paper on social care reform.
The event was also attended by approximately 70 MPs, including Nick Clegg MP, Liberal Democrat leader, and Stephen O’Brien, Shadow Minister for Health. Many of the MPs remained after the event to listen to the attendees’ personal experiences of the care system.
Thank’s to everybody who took part on the lobby and helped ensure that the Government finally published the Green Paper outlining their plans.
