Post Offices: the issues
The Post Office plans to close up to 2,500 post offices across the UK, many of which represent vital lifelines for older people.
Post Offices, especially in smaller towns and villages, can act as meeting place, local shop and connection to social services. Many older people rely on them as places to access benefits, information and financial services.
In October 2007, the public consultation period started for the proposed closure of 2,500 post offices across the UK.
The aim of the closure programme is to reduce the number of Post Offices which are currently making losses.
Between now and October 2008, 47 Area Plans will be published by Post Office Ltd, proposing which post offices should be closed. The plans will also include information on what other Post Offices are available in the area, and any substitute services available.
The public will have six weeks to comment on the plans before a final decision is made.
Post Offices are vital lifelines to many older people so please make sure the needs of older people are considered in any plans to close post offices in your area.
