Public toilets: the issues
Good public toilets should be available in all neighbourhoods to help reduce the risk of people with incontinence becoming housebound.
It is estimated that 3.5 million people suffer from urinary incontinence in the UK. More than half are over 65.
A Help the Aged survey revealed that:
- 80 per cent of respondents do not find it easy to find a public toilet.
- 78 per cent of respondents found that their local public toilets are not open when they need them.
The fear of a not being able to find a toilet at short notice means many older people do not leave their home as much as they would like.
Providing more and better public toilets is important to ensure older people are able to leave their homes with confidence rather than fear.
