What we want
We want more public toilets and better facilities to allow older people the freedom to take an active part in their communities and in society.
In August 2006, Help the Aged carried out a survey into current public toilet provision to back our concerns about the poor facilities provided for older people. The results are in the report 'Nowhere to go', which can be downloaded from the right hand side of this page.
On the basis of this survey, we want:
- The Government to commission a regular national mapping exercise to identify where toilet facilities are declining.
- Local authorities to involve local older people’s forums in monitoring toilet standards.
- Performance indicators to be set for opening times, provision and quality of public toilets.
- No closures of public toilets without consultation with local residents and due consideration to providing an alternative.
- New developments such as transport interchanges, shopping centres and supermarkets to include toilet facilities.
