The issues
The national bus pass for England is very welcome, but some older people will be left behind unless more is done.
In April 2008, the Government introduced a national bus pass for people over 60 which provides free local bus travel across the whole of England. This is welcome progress.
However, the Government’s own statistics show that 45 per cent of people over 75 struggle to walk 200 metres or use a bus.
These people need an alternative to the bus pass if they too are to see improvements in their mobility and independence.
Furthermore, many older people find that bus services rarely cater for their needs. Bus stops can be dimly lit and unsafe, timetables difficult to read, and drivers can be inconsiderate of older people's mobility difficulties.
