Our campaign results
These campaign successes prove that together we can put older people's issues on the agenda and really make a difference.
We hope they inspire you to visit our take action page and take action online today.
Just Equal Treatment - banning age discrimination
After a long campaign in which Help the Aged supporters signed petitions, emailed politicians and wrote to local newspapers, the Government listened to this united voice and promised to make age discrimination illegal in areas like health and insurance, where older people often get a poorer or more expensive service just because of their age.
But we need to make sure the Government delivers on these promises - click here to take action
Lose the Loophole - human rights in care homes
The 'Lose the loophole' campaign identified the need to ensure that older people resident in private care homes were fully protected by law.
Hundreds of supporters emailed the Lord Chancellor asking him to 'lose the loophole' and this year the Government announced it will amend its Health and Social Care Bill in an effort to provide this protection by making the Human Rights Act apply to all private care homes.
Tokens for travel
After hearing that their council had decided to cut travel tokens, Portsmouth Pensioners’ Association went into campaigning mode. Members met council leaders and wrote letters to councillors and their local newspaper. A protest was also held outside the local authority headquarters.
Portsmouth City Council overturned its decision and pledged tokens for 2008/9, meaning that over 36,000 older people in Portsmouth now have the option of tokens or the bus pass.
Lifetime Homes
Thanks to pressure from Help the Aged campaigners, Housing Minister Caroline Flint has promised to ensure that in England, all public housing from 2011 and all new public and private housing from 2013, is built to Lifetime Home Standards.
