Bihar Flood appeal
We urgently need your help to provide emergency health care to older people and their families affected by the devastating floods in Bihar.
Severe flooding in the Indian province of Bihar has damaged some 250,000 homes and displaced over 2.5 million people.
Said to be the worst in the area for over 50 years, the floods were caused when the Kosi River breached its banks and sent huge waves into nearby villages in Bihar. Houses have been submerged and roads and railway tracks washed away.
Up to 180,000 older people are likely to have been affected; many have still not received any aid and are taking refuge on rooftops, embankments and buildings.
'Older people are facing particular challenges. Being less mobile, they are finding it more difficult to escape rising floodwaters...'
Avenash Datta, Country Head of Programmes and Emergencies at HelpAge India, says: 'The most immediate needs are food, shelter from the continuing rain and healthcare to stop the spread of waterborne diseases. Diarrhoea and dysentery are also a problem and there is a real shortage of medical support.
'Older people are facing particular challenges. Being less mobile, they are finding it more difficult to escape rising floodwaters, and are more susceptible to infection. It’s vital that we get help to them as quickly as possible.'
Through our international partners, HelpAge International and HelpAge India, Help the Aged will be able to respond to the needs of older people in the field but we desperately need your help.
