How you can protect your identity
Identity theft occurs when your personal information is stolen. A stolen identity can be used to fraudulently open bank accounts, obtain credit or claim benefit yet a few simple precautions could protect yours.
Diary Notes
Keep note in your diary of when your credit card bills and bank statements normally arrive each month so you can quickly identify any unusual changes or delays.
Unexpected bills or statements
If you receive bills or statements that are addressed to you, but you know don't belong to you, contact the company immediately and inform them that there may be a problem.
Shredding
Shred receipts, statements, bills and official forms before you throw them away.
Check your credit file
Check your credit file on a regular basis. If you are unexpectedly declined credit, check that your credit file is correct.
Check your statements
Check your statements and bills to ensure that you recognise all the transactions on your credit card and bank statements.
Personal Information
Don't reveal your personal information, particularly your date of birth or mother's maiden name, unless you are sure who you are dealing with.
Holiday plans
Make plans to keep your post safe while you go on holiday.
Shoulder Surfing
Take care at cash points to avoid a potential fraudster looking over your shoulder to obtain your details.
Security
Keep your bag, wallet or purse with you at all times when you're out and about.
Keep your documents safe
Keep your documents, cards and passport secure. You could also consider installing a domestic safe or lockable cabinet to keep them in.
