Big Summer Picnic
The Big Summer Picnic grants programme combats isolation by funding summer picnics and day trips for older people's groups.
Almost one million older people in the UK are always or often lonely (Source: Help the Aged Spotlight Report, 2008). In the summer, those feelings of isolation can intensify. Holidays are not an option for many pensioners on fixed incomes; and when others are enjoying the good weather, mobility problems stop some older people from joining in.
Help the Aged provides funding for older people's groups, day centres and clubs across the UK to pay for a picnic or buffet during the summer, plus extra transport so that all members can take part.
In summer 2007, the programme helped about 23,000 older people to get out and socialise over a good meal.
Daniel Pearson, Director of Community Services for Help the Aged, says: 'We are committed to assisting local community groups in their remarkable work that supports so many older people.
'Transport and food are some of the expenses that cash-starved groups and projects find difficult to meet, and we are pleased to be able to help.'
