Man helping an older woman in a mobility busSeniorMobility

SeniorMobility provides grants for groups and projects to buy urgently needed vehicles, scooters and mobility equipment.

The SeniorMobility Campaign restores independence and reduces isolation by increasing older people's access to special vehicles and local transport schemes.

Why is there a need for SeniorMobility?

In 2006, 4 per cent of over-65s agreed strongly and 8 per cent agreed slightly that they felt trapped in their own home (Help the Aged / GfK NOP 2006). By making more vehicles and equipment available, SeniorMobility helps keep people active and independent, at the same time as reducing isolation and improving quality of life.

Who can SeniorMobility help?

SeniorMobility is aimed at helping community groups and projects working with older people, including:

  • Day centres and luncheon clubs
  • Nursing homes
  • Dial-a-Ride and other community transport schemes
  • Shopmobility
  • Gardening projects
  • Care and Repair
  • Meals on Wheels

In other words, any group needing vehicles or equipment to continue their work is invited to get in touch with SeniorMobility.

What can SeniorMobility provide?

  • Accessible Minibuses – 8, 12 or 16 seaters
  • Community cars
  • Multi-purpose vehicles
  • Adapted gardening vans
  • Mobile day-care, and information centres
  • Care & Repair vehicles

What else does SeniorMobility do?

A SeniorMobility transport expert can deal with all aspects of a vehicle purchase on behalf of a project - including the financial and legal paperwork - for a nominal fee. Projects that have secured enough funding for the vehicle by themselves can enjoy significant price discounts by purchasing it through SeniorMobility's bulk-buying scheme.

Case studies

The following case studies give examples of the type of support that is available through SeniorMobility.

Sandhurst Day Centre, Sandhurst, Berkshire:
Sandhurst Day Centre became the proud owners of the 1,500th vehicle presented by SeniorMobility when the keys to their brand new minibus were handed over in May 2002. The Day Centre provides a range of services to local older residents every week, from hairdressing and chiropody to shopping trips and outings. Funding for this vehicle came from the Help the Aged Royal Berkshire Committee.

Salisbury and Trowbridge Shopmobility, Salisbury, Wiltshire:
In November 2001, SeniorMobility provided four brand new scooters and two manual wheelchairs for Salisbury and Trowbridge Shopmobility. These are now in constant use by two new outreach projects in Tisbury and Warminster – both rural areas served by the scheme. Several older people are able to benefit from the equipment every day. They can go shopping more easily and remain both active and independent.

Halsey House, Cromer, Norfolk:
Halsey House was opened by the Royal British Legion shortly after the Second World War, and is now home to 75 residents all of whom are ex-Services personnel. SeniorMobility presented a brand new minibus to Halsey House in March 2002. According to the staff and residents, this has become a real lifeline to keep residents active and involved in the local community.

Chopsticks, Northallerton, North Yorkshire:
Chopsticks is a community gardening scheme, carrying out work for local older people.  It is the only scheme of its kind to reach older people living in the more rural villages in the area. The group badly needed a replacement van to transport their gardening tools and staff to and from people's homes. The new vehicle provided by SeniorMobility in October 2001 ensured that this valuable work was able to continue and expand.
