Crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo
A team from our sister organisation, HelpAge International, is working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to help affected older people.
Help the Aged in collaboration with the health agency Merlin, are involved in the delivery of vital healthcare to older people in the conflict-torn country.
The ongoing conflict in the DRC has displaced over 1 million people, leaving them in desperate need of food, water, shelter and healthcare.
Older people are generally less mobile and prone to heath problems making it difficult to escape dangerous areas and access aid.
Teresa, 63, pictured above, fled her home as shots were being fired. 'I have a husband but as soon as the shooting began I ran for my life and do not know where he is.'
Teresa walked for two days to the camps in Goma without anything to eat. She lives with her children and five other families in a small house. 'My son has to take care of all of us and yet he has no job. My daughter gave birth a few days ago and it has increased the burden on my son.'
Teresa is no stranger to conflict. Eight years ago her other daughter was taken by armed forces. 'When I tried to rescue her I was shot in the arm', she says. 'I have no idea whether she is alive or dead.'
