Crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo
A team from our sister organisation, HelpAge International, is working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to help affected older people.
We are also working closely with Merlin, a UK charity which brings healthcare and medical relief to vulnerable people caught up in natural disasters and conflict.
Teresa, 63, pictured above, fled her home as shots were being fired. 'I have a husband but as soon as the shooting began I ran for my life and do not know where he is.'
Teresa walked for two days to the camps in Goma without anything to eat. She lives with her children and five other families in a small house. 'My son has to take care of all of us and yet he has no job. My daughter gave birth a few days ago and it has increased the burden on my son.'
Teresa is no stranger to conflict. Eight years ago her other daughter was taken by armed forces. 'When I tried to rescue her I was shot in the arm', she says. 'I have no idea whether she is alive or dead.'
Help the Aged is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which has raised over £6 million since the launch of its appeal.
Brendan Gormley, Chief Executive of the DEC, said: 'I would like to thank everyone who has contributed. For those who have not yet made a donation, please give as there is still time to help aid workers scale up their life-saving work in the region.'
