Photo gallery: How HIV affects older people in developing countries

HIV and AIDS have changed the lives of many older people, yet they are often overlooked in HIV and AIDS programmes.  Older people are affected by HIV and AIDS in two ways: they are infected with HIV through the same routes as other age groups; and they care for people living with HIV, orphans and vulnerable children.

HIV is not a moral issue. HIV is a disease. It is a serious development issue that cannot be ignored by development agencies.

Most HIV prevention programmes fail to take into account the specific needs of older people. However, if older people are not targeted in HIV prevention programmes, more will become infected with the virus.

We provide support to older people who are living with HIV and to older people caring for those living with the virus, orphans and vulnerable children.

Very few non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are addressing the needs of older people in the face of the pandemic. Help the Aged and HelpAge International work in partnership to support long-term development and emergency relief in developing countries across the world.
