The HandyVan service

A fleet of 3 HandyVans are based in key areas around Northern Ireland and deliver a free service to those who meet the criteria below:

  • Applicants are 60 years of age or over.
  • Applicants' disposable savings/assets do not exceed £10,000 (not including the value of their home).
  • HandyVans operate in their area.

Everyone is vulnerable to burglary, and the HandyVan service enables people to feel safer in their homes. Prevention is always the key to a safe, secure home and HandyVan fitters will work to help you ensure that your home is free from the risk of burglary, fitting security equipment such as door chains and viewers, window locks and installing safety features such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Minor repairs can also be included.

If you would benefit from the HandyVan service, or you know someone who would, then please call the team on 0845 026 1055 or email handyvan@helptheaged.org.uk

Peter, a HandyVan fitter, talks about his job

'This is a very good service for vulnerable older people; they all say that it makes them feel much safer in their house.

'It's also interesting how people open up to you. You can be an ear for them and hopefully have some input into their lives. I hear some sad stories about rejection, the death of a family member.

'Lots of people are afraid these days. They worry that people break into homes, and if you interfere, they use violence.

'There's an obvious sense of relief when I show people the work I've done. They are chuffed to bits. Some people hadn't even known there was such a thing as a window lock!

'Let’s hope for a society where people are respected for who they are, and where older people can feel safe in their own homes.'

Customer feedback

'Peter the fitter was very efficient, kind, lovely. It was great to let someone I could trust into my home. He was there exactly when he said he would be and was a pleasure to have in the house. Thank you all so much of the great work you are doing.'
'Your HandyVan man, Peter, was great. It is a lovely service and Peter was most courteous.'

Gifts in kind

Many people visited by a HandyVan fitter want to thank them with money. This isn't allowed, and instead the fitters encourage clients to donate to the Charity. Peter adds: 'I can’t say no to biscuits though!'
