What you can do
Your support and involvement is crucial to the success of our campaign. We cannot help stop elder abuse without you.
Write to your MP
Just as 25,000 pledges of support for our campaign makes a powerful case for government action, so can a letter to your MP.
As a constituent, you can exert a tremendous amount of influence over your MP/AM. Please write or email your MP, or your Assembly Member if you live in Wales, and ask them to support Help the Aged's elder abuse campaign.
Raise awareness locally
Help the Aged has published a range of information about elder abuse. This information is also available in PDF format, you can download a leaflet and an in-depth booklet. We are distributing materials to through a range of outlets - from GP surgeries to older people's forums - but we cannot reach everyone without your help.
Does your local library have a space for distributing information about issues affecting the public? Perhaps you could place a stack of leaflets there? Or in your community centre?
Both publications are free and can be ordered by emailing here
There are many other things you could do to help raise local awareness of our campaign. For example, does your church, school or community produce a newsletter? Perhaps you could write a short article to be included in the next newsletter?
Perhaps you'd even be willing to organise a public meeting and invite your local MP or AM?
Anything that you can do to help promote Help the Aged's elder abuse campaign would be tremendously helpful.
Working with the Trade Unions
Trade Unions have an important role to play in influencing and educating their members on the scandal of elder abuse. Help the Aged in Northern Ireland will be engaging with the unions, particularly those in the health sector, and asking them to help spread the campaign’s message.
Working with the churches
Churches and church members play a huge role in supporting the older members of our communities. Help the Aged in Northern Ireland will be working with the churches to highlight the scandal of elder abuse and to give advice and guidance on what to do if abuse is suspected.
