Famous faces old and young
6 August 2008
An exhibition of photographs of Northern Ireland personalities opens in Derry/Londonderry next week.
The exhibition received rave reviews and excellent attendance at its launch in Belfast earlier this year.
The photographs, by local photographer John Harrison, were commissioned by Help the Aged in Northern Ireland to celebrate intergenerational relationships.
Film star Liam Neeson, who participated in the exhibition, says: 'My relationship with my mother is of great importance to me: she has been a wonderful support throughout my life. Living quite a distance away, this bond has certainly been put to the test, but coming home and spending time with my mother still remains a priority for me.'
Other participants include First Minister Ian Paisley, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, singer-songwriter Duke Special, artist Basil Blackshaw, poet Michael Longley, rugby stars Mike Gibson, Bill McBride, Jack Kyle and David Humphries, and football legend David Healy.
Rosemary Kelly, Chairman of Help the Aged in Northern Ireland, says: 'This collection includes familiar faces in settings very different to that in which people are used to seeing them.
'This is no longer the First Minister, but a doting grandfather with his grandsons; not the Hollywood superstar, but a son visiting his proud mother.
'Hundreds of older people play a vital role in their local communities without recognition'
'These are celebrities - but hundreds of older people play a vital role in their local communities without recognition. We hope that, after viewing this exhibition, people will take time to consider the contribution older people make to society.'
The exhibition is on display at Millennium Forum, Derry/Londonderry, from 14 August to 12 September.
An accompanying book is available for purchase from Help the Aged by contacting Barbara Blundell on 028 9023 0666.
